Lakeland can be found in Polk County, Florida right between Tampa and Orlando. When you relocate to Lakeland, you get a different view of the Sunshine State. You’ll see historic architecture, serene lakes, and sweeping oaks. Another perk Lakeland provides is the small town appeal with all the extra amenities of the big city. Here, you’ll find the unique historic district and museums with artwork designed by some of the local artists. The museums also contain Asian art and Georgian silver and they include a sculpture garden. Not only that, but there’s a children’s museum that is state-of-the art.

The Lakeland real estate market offers opportunities for everyone and there are many good deals to be found. It’s an open market with $112,000 for the median sales price. There are many great Lakeland homes for sale that would be perfect and that would fit your particular needs. It’s a great time to buy now that the price of homes has decreased by about 16% from last quarter.

History of Lakeland

Spanish Explorers came to Florida in the 16th century. Until that time, it was inhabited by Native Americans. During the Civil War, the northern settlers were trying to build homesteads. Many succeeded in building farms and raising cattle. During the 1800s, the three Seminole Wars caused great conflict between white settlers and Indians. Stability and peace was made due to the construction of military forts. The need for beef and agricultural products was strong. There was a ready market and troops need to be supplied.

A man named Abraham Munn, traveled from Louisville, Kentucky to buy up 80 acres of land back in 1882. Today that land is now downtown Lakeland. It was named for its many lakes. In 1885, the town of Lakeland was incorporated. A mysterious fire caused a train depot from a rival town in Lake Parker to burn down. That depot was then built in Lakeland. Since about 25 trains would stop in Lakeland daily, economic development and tourism became a big part of the town. The Tremont Hotel was built in 1885 by Munn. South Florida considered the Tremont to be one of the best hotels in Florida.

Lakeland is also known for becoming the third city in Florida to ever have the electric light. During the land boom of 1920, began the construction of many Renaissance style buildings. There are even some still in Lakeland today in the Munn Historic District. Until the Depression of 1929 when the value of land was decreasing, the community was still growing. New things were being built like the Lakeland Municipal Airport and the Detroit Tigers Baseball Club. The city started to recover. It was now 1938; Frank Lloyd Wright was a famous architect who designed Florida Southern College. Since Lakeland is centrally located it continues to grow and develop.

Lakeland Today

Today over 90,200 residents currently reside there. Large shopping centers and restaurants make up many of Lakelands big employers. Privately owned companies who have skyscrapers following Lake Mirror are located in Downtown Lakeland which is known as their headquarters. Those who live in Lakeland have several lakes surrounding them. Lake Parker, Lake Bonny, Lakeshore and Lake Hollingsworth and many others are all within walking distance. Subdivisions like Valencia Heights, Cleveland Heights, Beacon Hill and Granada surround many of the lakes. Many golf courses such as Cleveland Heights Golf Course and Country Club and Long Palms Golf Course are here for your enjoyment.

Things to Do in Lakeland

If you’re a classic car enthusiast, then you won’t want to miss the Lake Mirror Classic Auto Festival and Auction for 2011. This year they are auctioning off 100 collector cars during their inaugural Lake Mirror Classic Car Auction. The auction will be conducted on behalf of Lake Mirror Classic. The public will be able to view the cars.
The festival will be held in downtown Lakeland, FL on Saturday, October 15th at the Lake Mirror Classic Auto Festival. Over 35,000 people are expected to attend. If you would like more information on the event as it becomes available send an email to registrar@lakemirrorclassic.com

If it’s music you’re into, Lakeland has some major talent coming its way with this year’s Florida Strawberry Festival. You won’t want to miss the Doobie Brothers on March 10th. Also playing on the 10th is George Jones and on the 11th is up and coming Country Star Justin Moore plus many more musical guests throughout the month. Check out eventful.com for venues and times.

Schools in Lakeland

The Polk County School Board operates the public schools. Lakeland has 28 elementary schools, 7 middle and 5 regular high schools. They also have 3 high schools that are magnet-choice or schools which teach special needs children. Lakeland also has the charter school, McKeel Academy of Technology.

There are also many opportunities for higher learning available. The most well known college in Lakeland, Florida Southern College is located on Lake Hollingsworth. There is also Southeastern University which is also affiliated with Assembles of God which accommodates 3000 students. The University of South Florida Polytechnic is on the same site with Polk State College and can be found on Winter Lake Road. All of these schools are fine institutions, perfect for current and new residents to Lakeland.

Economy

You can find Lakeland as you drive down interstate 4. It’s the largest city between Tampa and Orlando. The biggest industries are citrus, phosphate mining and cattle. Also gaining in importance over the last few decades are medicine, insurance, music, transportation and tourism. Citrus has been a big part of Lakeland since the early settlers started planting and selling crops back in the 1850s. Even though it’s not the biggest industry anymore, it’s still a major part of Polk County and Lakeland.

Bone Valley is where most of the phosphate mining takes place, producing about 25% of the U.S supply. The largest employer in Lakeland is Publix Supermarkets, one of the largest grocery chains in the U.S. This store employs well over 6,500 Lakeland residents. That includes in the headquarters and warehouse.

Lakeland is also known as a transportation hub for FedEx Freight & FedEx Services as well as Saddle Creek Corporation. In fact they employ over 600 Lakeland residents. Other larger companies include GEICO, Rooms To Go, Lakeland Regional Medical Center and Summit Consulting.

Why live in Lakeland

As you can see, Lakeland has a lot to offer in the way of rich history, fantastic events, great schools, and employment opportunities. The only thing left to do is check out the local Lakeland real estate and find the right fit for you. There are many Lakeland homes available. Lakeland offers that small town feel and it’s the perfect place to call home.

Spectrom Carpet Cleaning is now offering 24/7 Emergency Service

In the event of an emergency, Spectrom is offering 24 hour and 7 day a week services to local customers. Emergency situations like water damage caused from flooding need to be treated immediately before the water completely ruins your carpet. Water that sits in the home will destroy the carpet, leave smells and becomes a breeding ground for microorganisms. Spectrom started the 24/7 emergency service to help customers who needed a reliable and affordable carpet cleaning specialist. Sam Brown, owner and operator has built a reputation in his local community by continually providing his customers with outstanding and inexpensive services.

If your home is flooded, it is important to evacuate your family and contact a licensed water extraction specialist immediately. Most water extraction companies provide 24/7 emergency service because removing the water fast and drying your home is of the utmost importance. By allowing the water to sit, floors, carpets and areas of your home will be damaged beyond repair. In this time of an emergency, Spectrom understands your needs and is waiting for your call. You can contact Sam Brown and speak with an honest professional who will provide you his expert service for an affordable price.

Spectrom Carpet Cleaning is providing its 24/7 Emergency Services in Hillsborough County and Pinellas County including but not limited to Tampa, Brandon, Valrico, Riverview, Plant City, Lakeland and Winter Haven, Florida. Spectrom announced the new service areas to target more homes and commercial properties.

Spring Training Over ? Next is the Real Thing!

Spring Training Over – Next is the Real Thing!

The Gators football team concluded its 2008 spring training with the annual Orange and Blue Debut Saturday afternoon in front of a record crowd of 61,000 fans. Blue defeated Orange, 28-14, at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium before the highest-attended spring game. The previous record of 58,500 was established in head coach Urban Meyer’s 2005 debut. Blue won its second straight spring contest on Saturday, and has won three out of the last five Orange and Blue Debuts.

Saturday’s contest featured several events on the day before a national television audience on ESPN and with ESPN College GameDay in attendance. Junior quarterback Tim Tebow (Jacksonville, Fla.) led the Blue team and finished 13-of-21 for 200 yards and two passing touchdowns. Sophomore quarterback Cameron Newton (College Park, Ga.) of the Orange team was 6-of-18 for 53 yards. Sophomore running back Emmanuel Moody (Coppell, Tex.) of the Orange squad turned in a game-high 111 yards rushing on 14 carries with one score. Freshman running back Chris Rainey (Lakeland, Fla.) added 76 yards on the ground and made one of the Blue’s four touchdowns. Sophomore running back Mon Williams (Mesquite, Tex.) put Blue on the scoreboard first with a 9-yard TD rush with 7:17 remaining in the first quarter. Tebow’s throw intended for wide receiver Butch Rowley (Orlando, Fla.) on Blue’s second possession was picked off by cornerback Ahmad Black. This was his first interception in three spring games. Orange could not take advantage of the pick, and Rainey later caught a 65-yard pass for Blue’s second touchdown with 0:44 left in the first quarter. The Tebow-to-Rainey connection marked the longest play in an Orange and Blue Debut since 2001.

It looks like this year’s team is shaping up to do well. Keep your eyes on the team while they keep their eyes on the ball and the goalposts. Show your spirit. Support your team. Don’t forget to wear your official Gator Gear.

Nurse, Turned Flight Instruction School Owner/pilot Extraordinaire

On a recent Sunday afternoon, this writer caught up with a successful woman business owner, whose flight instruction and general aviation business is physically located at John Wayne Airport in Orange County, California. But, how did Evelyn A. Carlson, a Nursing Instructor at St. John College in Cleveland, Ohio ultimately emerge as a partner in a Learn to Fly business on the West Coast and become a pilot extraordinaire. Here’s the story.

As an intermediate step, Carlson began to teach both Nursing and Flight Instruction as an Assistant Professor in two different departments at Kent State University, one of which was Technology (think Flying). Lyn commented that both of these teaching endeavors were not so dissimilar as they might seem at first glance. Sure, the data itself was different, but not the process. Both had scientific and technical aspects; each involved manipulating equipment; and both at times required instantaneous decisions.

Of course, as we age and experience a wide range of different life circumstances, a number of unexpected choices emerge. Just ask Lyn Carlson if that didn’t happen to her. Further, some of the chapters in our lives take place before age 50, while other parts of our life evolve later.

Along the way, Lyn served in the Peace Corps in Nyeri, Kenya, where she taught nursing. Further, during graduate school, Carlson received a National Institute of Health full scholarship and living expenses stipend. In 1974, Lyn completed her MSN from Case Western Reserve University in Ohio. After completion of her Master’s degree, she initially began teaching nursing at the baccalaureate level. But, then, her love for flying plus her advanced degree combined to also allow her to teach flying in Kent, Ohio, too. At the time, Lyn was 35 years old.

For the next four years, Lyn arrived at the airport early in the morning, where she served as the flying instructor from 7 AM until Noon. Then, she would teach nursing in the afternoon. Finally, she would drive back to the School of Technology building on campus at the end of the day to serve as an assistant professor in Technology, where she taught the evening ground schools until 9 or 10 PM. What a schedule this dedicated teacher and flight instructor kept in those days.

As a pilot, she joined the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) in 1979 as member # 006905147. During 1981, Lyn won the Amelia Earhart Medal by finishing 1st place in one of the events at the National Intercollegiate Flying Association meet, which was held at the University of North Dakota. By 1982, Carlson was already listed in Who’s Who of American Women.

In her case, the circumstance, which led Lyn to move back to California “right back where she started from” went like this. Due to the declining health of her grandparents, who held a special place in Lyn’s heart, she returned to the Golden State to spend time with them and help care for them. Back in California, Carlson also began to hand out resumes and, ultimately, wound up as Chief Flight Instructor at Sunrise Aviation in Santa Ana, California. So, she stayed in Southern California, where her family had long established ties, which actually went back four generations.

After joining the team at Sunrise as partner and Certified Flight Instructor (CFI), Lyn helped to develop FAA Approved Flight Training Programs, which included the writing of ground and flight training syllabi, as well as getting them approved by the FAA. She also supervised the training given by more than 25 other flight instructors. As Chief Instructor, she was ultimately responsible for certifying all student school records for accuracy and compliance. She also gave flight instruction herself and was responsible for Stage Checks.

Of course, Carlson was also a strong influence on the growth at Sunrise Aviation from just two smaller, single-engine aircraft at the outset to its 32 aircraft plus 25 flight instructors today. Raised originally in Redwood City, California, Lyn spent every summer in Newport Beach. Like her parents, she too attended UCLA, where she earned her undergraduate degree in Nursing.

In her late 40s, Lyn actually flew solo across the Atlantic in a Rockwell 114 from El Monte, California to Guernsey, Channel Islands via Lakeland, Florida (where she stopped for tanking) to Gander, Newfoundland and Santa Maria in the Azores. Why had Carlson taken such a bold step? As a pilot, she was intent on getting everything possible out of her lifetime flying experience. This goal on her part made the trip inevitable.

Obviously, upon her return from this adventure, she became highly in demand as a speaker before local 99s in her area. The Ninety-Nines organization, which was founded in 1929 by 99 women pilots, existed then and now for the mutual support of its members. Not surprisingly, Amelia Earhart became the first president of one of these local groups in her area. During 1992 and 1993, Lyn continued to make additional motivational talks about flying solo across the Atlantic, while she also engaged in one-on-one teaching for men and women, who were considering the same type of flight.

Of special note, during 1995, Lyn Carlson was also chosen for the prestigious FAA National Flight Instructor of the Year Award. Winning at the local and regional FAA levels, the national selection committee was made up of representatives from all the major General Aviation organizations, which included the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, the National Business Aircraft Association, the National Association of Flight Instructors, the General Aviation Manufacturers Association and the Experimental Aircraft Association in addition to officials from the FAA itself. In fact, the entire process actually took four months to complete. What an honor for Lyn Carlson!

By 1998, Carlson had also added the additional title of Director of Training at Sunrise Aviation because her job duties and responsibilities also included student enrollment. Further, from 1995 until the present, Lyn has also administered the FAA computer knowledge exams in her area.

In addition, Lyn Carlson has also had the distinction of serving in each of the following capacities, which have included being a National Transportation Safety Board Consulted Party (during 1997-1998). In this instance, for example, Carlson reviewed data associated with a fatal student accident and wrote an official party report, which was included in the final accident write-up. Then, as an AOPA Flight Instructor Refresher Clinic Lecturer from 1997 until 2003, Lyn traveled throughout the US to present and discuss topics required by the FAA. One such topic was an in-depth review of 14 CFR Part 61: Certification for Pilots and Instructors. For its part, the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association is one organization authorized by the FAA to offer the required 16 hour Flight Instructor Refresher Courses needed to renew someone’s Flight Instructor Certificate. She also continues to serve as a Designated Pilot Examiner. In this capacity, Carlson gives Pilot Practical Tests for Private, Instrument and Commercial candidates (in airplanes). The examination, in this instance, includes both an oral and an in-flight practical test. The DPE position actually represents an appointment by the FAA and, as such, is considered a prestigious one in the flying community. While the FAA does give these tests, staffing does not permit them to do the majority of Practical Exam flights at the General Aviation level. Therefore, DPEs are designated by the FAA to examine for proficiency to determine who gets pilot certificates in many instances.

Dedicated nurse, teacher, college professor, flight instructor and trainer, Lyn Carlson has today returned to her home state of California to do what she really loves and what all of the experiences in her life have prepared her to do: teach and fly herself. Most of us cannot do either. But, for those of us who live in Southern California, who desire to learn to fly, Lyn Carlson and her company would be a great place to start.

After all, as Cessna used to comment in its ads of yesterday, “If I can fly, you can fly.”

Restaurants for Sale in Central Florida, Polk County businesses for sale

In the economy as it is now and has been for quite awhile, a lot of businesses owners are wondering whether to shutter the doors or continue to plow through to the other side. Some businesses are selling and the owners are going back to work for someone else.

This story is about two businesses owners that have decided to sell one of their businesses, but it’s for a happy reason.

Central Florida is experience extreme growth, even amidst a national recession. What’s fueling the growth in Central Florida and especially Polk County? Polk County is centrally located not only smack dab in the middle of the state and is easily accessible from all major highways and parkways. But Winter Haven is perfectly located 45 minutes from Orlando and 45 minutes from Tampa via the Polk Parkway. Lakeland is a growing arts and business city and is located 20 minutes away and Bartow is 15 minutes away.

The growth in Winter Haven is fueled by people leaving Tampa and Orlando is search of lower cost real estate and less hassles of the city life. The real estate industry in Winter Haven is changing the landscape of the city. Once covered mostly in small housing areas and orange groves. Winter Haven is now home to multiple over 55 active retirement communities, Lake Ashton and Vienna Square to name but two. These communities bring residents from all over the U.S. and sell them winter residences in Winter Haven. The city’s name says it all.. Winter Haven. With seasonably nice weather during the winter monthes, who wants to shovel snow when you can shovel sunshine?

Central Florida Sports Complex recently began development of Lake Myrtle Sports Complex which is a huge multiple sports facility with multiple baseball fields, soccer fields and indoor courts for basketball and swimming. Lake Myrtle Sports complex is the host to the Sunshine Games and many competitive college level sporting events. Lake Myrtle Sports Complex is located in Auburndale which is 15 minutes from Winter Haven, and Winter Haven enjoys the economic gains from the visitors to the complex in the form of restaurant sales and hotel rentals.

Legoland Corporation recently acquired Cypress Gardens and is bringing 1,000 new jobs to Winter Haven. Legoland is slated to open in 2011 and will bring hundreds of thousands of new visitors to polk county every year.

In the midst of this growth trend many people have chosen to follow their long held dream to open their own business. Either having been downsized from a long held job or just the fact that with such growth there is no better time than now to be your own boss and cash in on new opportunities.

One such business that is now available for sale in polk county is Cafe Latte a fifteen year old “locals favorite” cafe and coffee house. Perfectly located two stop lights from Legoland. With massive traffic expected to visit Legoland every year, Cafe Latte is primed to enjoy all the new business.

The owners of Cafe Latte are selling because of a second business that was born out of the cafe nearly eight years ago. Vigoa Cuisine is their seasoned olive oil business, and with the growth of the Canary Island Garlic and Herb Olive Oil business, more time is being focused on promotion and travel. The owners of Cafe Latte need to spend more time away from the cafe and feel the time is ripe to sell.

Cafe Latte is located at 200 Orchid Springs Dr. Winter Haven, Fl. 33884 you may reach Miriam Vigoa the co-founder at 1.863.318.8777 if you are interested.

Polk County will continue to grow with the added railway system that is in the works to connect Tampa and Orlando. Winter Haven is already the bedroom city to these two cities. Meaning that people enjoy the lower real estate in Winter Haven so they sleep in Winter Haven and drive to Tampa or Orlando to work.

Winter Haven and Polk County’s future is bright and getting brighter everyday. It’s an exciting time to live in Central Florida and the glow just keeps bringing more people to enjoy it.

Lakeland Pig Festival – Tiger Town – Florida 2010

2010 was a truly great year for the Lakeland Pig Festival.

Participants competed against each other in two categories, with amateurs in the backyard category (local teams, competing for bragging rights, ribbons and trophies), and more experienced entrants in a “professional group” who vie for a ,000 prize.

The backyard contest also follows KCBS rules and regulations, and a KCBS representative announced that the Publix Backyard Competition has grown to be the largest of any backyard competition held anywhere.

Among the participants were three teams featured on TLC’s BBQ Pitmasters that aired it’s final episode a few days ago which gained interest from those following the series on TV, and no doubt contributed towards drawing large attendance numbers to this undeniably popular event.

Last year, the Lakeland Pig Festival drew a crowd of around 30,000 over the two day period that it was held on, and saw just as many attend this year though exact numbers have yet to be confirmed.

It is a little known fact that most of the judges travel great distances to participate in the Lakeland Pig Festival and judging for every pro contest has been 100% by KCBS trained and certified judges so far.

The KCBS is “the largest international organization of barbecue enthusiasts” and has sanctioned the Lakeland Pig Festival since its first contest in 1997. Professional teams travel from all over the U.S. to compete in four categories: Ribs, Chicken, Pork and Brisket who come in great numbers to enjoy the atmosphere and the Florida sunshine.

Over 200 teams from 17 states have competed in Lakeland since the Pig Festival’s inception, and many of these well known teams return year after year whom have helped contribute over 0,000 to charitable organizations within Polk County since 1997.
