History of Lakeland

Spanish Explorers came to Florida in the 16th century. Until that time, it was inhabited by Native Americans. During the Civil War, the northern settlers were trying to build homesteads. Many succeeded in building farms and raising cattle. During the 1800s, the three Seminole Wars caused great conflict between white settlers and Indians. Stability and peace was made due to the construction of military forts. The need for beef and agricultural products was strong. There was a ready market and troops need to be supplied.

A man named Abraham Munn, traveled from Louisville, Kentucky to buy up 80 acres of land back in 1882. Today that land is now downtown Lakeland. It was named for its many lakes. In 1885, the town of Lakeland was incorporated. A mysterious fire caused a train depot from a rival town in Lake Parker to burn down. That depot was then built in Lakeland. Since about 25 trains would stop in Lakeland daily, economic development and tourism became a big part of the town. The Tremont Hotel was built in 1885 by Munn. South Florida considered the Tremont to be one of the best hotels in Florida.

Lakeland is also known for becoming the third city in Florida to ever have the electric light. During the land boom of 1920, began the construction of many Renaissance style buildings. There are even some still in Lakeland today in the Munn Historic District. Until the Depression of 1929 when the value of land was decreasing, the community was still growing. New things were being built like the Lakeland Municipal Airport and the Detroit Tigers Baseball Club. The city started to recover. It was now 1938; Frank Lloyd Wright was a famous architect who designed Florida Southern College. Since Lakeland is centrally located it continues to grow and develop.

Nurse, Turned Flight Instruction School Owner/pilot Extraordinaire

Nurse, Turned Flight Instruction School Owner/pilot Extraordinaire

On a recent Sunday afternoon, this writer caught up with a successful woman business owner, whose flight instruction and all-purpose aviation business is physically located at John Wayne Airport in Orange County, California. But, how did Evelyn A. Carlson, a Nursing Instructor at St. John College in Cleveland, Ohio ultimately emerge as a partner in a Learn to Glide business on the West Coast and become a pilot extraordinaire. Here’s the tale.

As an intermediate step, Carlson started to teach both Nursing and Flight Instruction as an Assistant Professor in two different departments at Kent State University, one of which was Technology (reckon Flying). Lyn commented that both of these teaching endeavors were not so dissimilar as they might seem at first glance. Sure, the data itself was different, but not the process. Both had scientific and technological aspects; each involved manipulating equipment; and both at times required instantaneous decisions.

Of course, as we age and experience a wide range of different life circumstances, a number of unexpected choices emerge. Just question Lyn Carlson if that didn’t happen to her. Further, some of the chapters in our lives take place before age 50, while other parts of our life evolve later.

By the side of the way, Lyn served in the Concord Corps in Nyeri, Kenya, where she taught nursing. Further, during graduate school, Carlson received a National Institute of Health full scholarship and living expenses stipend. In 1974, Lyn completed her MSN from Case Western Reserve University in Ohio. After completion of her Master’s degree, she initially started teaching nursing at the baccalaureate level. But, then, her like for flying plus her advanced degree combined to also allow her to teach flying in Kent, Ohio, too. At the time, Lyn was 35 years ancient.

For the next four years, Lyn arrived at the airport early in the morning, where she served as the flying instructor from 7 AM until Noon. Then, she would teach nursing in the afternoon. Finally, she would drive back to the School of Technology building on campus at the end of the day to supply as an assistant professor in Technology, where she taught the evening impose a curfew schools until 9 or 10 PM. What a schedule this dyed-in-the-wool teacher and flight instructor kept in those days.

As a pilot, she joined the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Friendship (AOPA) in 1979 as member # 006905147. During 1981, Lyn won the Amelia Earhart Medal by finishing 1st place in one of the actions at the National Intercollegiate Flying Friendship meet, which was held at the University of North Dakota. By 1982, Carlson was already programmed in Who’s Who of American Women.

In her case, the circumstance, which led Lyn to go back to California “aptly back where she started from” went like this. Due to the declining health of her grandparents, who held a special place in Lyn’s heart, she returned to the Golden State to spend time with them and help care for them. Back in California, Carlson also started to hand out resumes and, ultimately, wound up as Chief Flight Instructor at Sunrise Aviation in Santa Ana, California. So, she stayed in Southern California, where her family had long established ties, which really went back four generations.

After joining the team at Sunrise as partner and Certified Flight Instructor (CFI), Lyn helped to renovate FAA Standard Flight Training Programs, which included the writing of impose a curfew and flight training syllabi, as well as getting them standard by the FAA. She also supervised the training given by more than 25 other flight instructors. As Chief Instructor, she was ultimately responsible for certifying all student school records for accuracy and compliance. She also gave flight instruction herself and was responsible for Stage Checks.

Of course, Carlson was also a strong shape on the growth at Sunrise Aviation from just two smaller, single-engine aircraft at the outset to its 32 aircraft plus 25 flight instructors today. Raised originally in Redwood City, California, Lyn spent every summer in Newport Beach. Like her parents, she too attended UCLA, where she earned her undergraduate degree in Nursing.

In her late 40s, Lyn really flew solo across the Atlantic in a Rockwell 114 from El Monte, California to Guernsey, Channel Islands via Lakeland, Florida (where she stopped for tanking) to Gander, Newfoundland and Santa Maria in the Azores. Why had Carlson taken such a bold step? As a pilot, she was intent on getting everything possible out of her lifetime flying experience. This goal on her part made the trip inevitable.

Obviously, upon her return from this adventure, she became highly in demand as a speaker before local 99s in her area. The Ninety-Nines establishment, which was founded in 1929 by 99 women pilots, existed then and now for the mutual help of its members. Not surprisingly, Amelia Earhart became the first president of one of these local groups in her area. During 1992 and 1993, Lyn continued to make additional motivational talks about flying solo across the Atlantic, while she also engaged in one-on-one teaching for men and women, who were considering the same type of flight.

Of special note, during 1995, Lyn Carlson was also chosen for the prestigious FAA National Flight Instructor of the Year Award. Attractive at the local and regional FAA levels, the national selection committee was made up of representatives from all the major All-purpose Aviation organizations, which included the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Friendship, the National Business Aircraft Friendship, the National Friendship of Flight Instructors, the All-purpose Aviation Manufacturers Friendship and the Experimental Aircraft Friendship in addition to officials from the FAA itself. In fact, the entire process really took four months to complete. What an distinction for Lyn Carlson!

By 1998, Carlson had also added the additional title of Director of Training at Sunrise Aviation because her job duties and responsibilities also included student conscription. Further, from 1995 until the present, Lyn has also administered the FAA pad knowledge exams in her area.

In addition, Lyn Carlson has also had the distinction of serving in each of the subsequent capacities, which have included being a National Transportation Safety Board Consulted Party (during 1997-1998). In this instance, for example, Carlson reviewed data associated with a fatal student accident and wrote an official party crash, which was included in the final accident write-up. Then, as an AOPA Flight Instructor Refresher Clinic Lecturer from 1997 until 2003, Lyn traveled throughout the US to present and discuss topics required by the FAA. One such topic was an in-depth review of 14 CFR Part 61: Certification for Pilots and Instructors. For its part, the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Friendship is one establishment endorsed by the FAA to offer the required 16 hour Flight Instructor Refresher Courses needed to renew someone’s Flight Instructor Certificate. She also continues to supply as a Designated Pilot Examiner. In this capacity, Carlson gives Pilot Practical Tests for Private, Instrument and Commercial candidates (in airplanes). The examination, in this instance, includes both an oral and an in-flight practical test. The DPE position really represents an appointment by the FAA and, as such, is considered a prestigious one in the flying community. While the FAA does give these tests, staffing does not permit them to do the majority of Practical Exam flights at the All-purpose Aviation level. Therefore, DPEs are designated by the FAA to inspect for proficiency to determine who gets pilot certificates in many instances.

Dyed-in-the-wool nurse, teacher, college professor, flight instructor and trainer, Lyn Carlson has today returned to her home state of California to do what she really likes and what all of the experiences in her life have prepared her to do: teach and glide herself. Most of us cannot do either. But, for those of us who live in Southern California, who desire to learn to glide, Lyn Carlson and her company would be a splendid place to start.

After all, as Cessna used to comment in its ads of yesterday, “If I can glide, you can glide.”

Restaurants for Sale in Central Florida, Polk County businesses for sale

In the economy as it is now and has been for quite awhile, a lot of businesses owners are wondering whether to shutter the doors or continue to plow through to the other side. Some businesses are selling and the owners are going back to work for someone else.

This tale is about two businesses owners that have chose to sell one of their businesses, but it’s for a pleased reason.

Central Florida is experience extreme growth, even amidst a national recession. What’s fueling the growth in Central Florida and especially Polk County? Polk County is centrally located not only smack dab in the middle of the state and is easily accessible from all major highways and parkways. But Winter Haven is perfectly located 45 minutes from Orlando and 45 minutes from Tampa via the Polk Parkway. Lakeland is a growing arts and business city and is located 20 minutes away and Bartow is 15 minutes away.

The growth in Winter Haven is fueled by people leaving Tampa and Orlando is search of lower cost real estate and less hassles of the city life. The real estate industry in Winter Haven is changing the landscape of the city. Once roofed mostly in small housing areas and orange groves. Winter Haven is now home to multiple over 55 active retirement communities, Lake Ashton and Vienna Square to name but two. These communities result in residents from all over the U.S. and sell them winter residences in Winter Haven. The city’s name says it all.. Winter Haven. With seasonably nice weather during the winter monthes, who wants to shovel snow when you can shovel sunshine?

Central Florida Sports Complex recently started development of Lake Myrtle Sports Complex which is a huge multiple sports facility with multiple baseball fields, soccer fields and indoor courts for basketball and swimming. Lake Myrtle Sports complex is the host to the Sunshine Games and many competitive college level sporting actions. Lake Myrtle Sports Complex is located in Auburndale which is 15 minutes from Winter Haven, and Winter Haven enjoys the economic gains from the visitors to the complex in the form of restaurant sales and hotel rentals.

Legoland Corporation recently bought Cypress Gardens and is bringing 1,000 new jobs to Winter Haven. Legoland is slated to open in 2011 and will result in hundreds of thousands of new visitors to polk county every year.

In the midst of this growth trend many people have chosen to follow their long held dream to open their own business. Either having been downsized from a long held job or just the fact that with such growth there is no better time than now to be your own boss and cash in on new opportunities.

One such business that is now available for sale in polk county is Cafe Latte a fifteen year ancient “locals pet” cafe and coffee household. Perfectly located two stop lights from Legoland. With massive traffic expected to visit Legoland every year, Cafe Latte is primed to delight in all the new business.

The owners of Cafe Latte are selling because of a second business that was born out of the cafe nearly eight years ago. Vigoa Cuisine is their seasoned olive oil business, and with the growth of the Canary Island Garlic and Herb Olive Oil business, more time is being focused on promotion and travel. The owners of Cafe Latte need to spend more time away from the cafe and feel the time is ripe to sell.

Cafe Latte is located at 200 Orchid Springs Dr. Winter Haven, Fl. 33884 you may reach Miriam Vigoa the co-founder at 1.863.318.8777 if you are interested.

Polk County will continue to grow with the added railway system that is in the works to connect Tampa and Orlando. Winter Haven is already the bedroom city to these two cities. Meaning that people delight in the lower real estate in Winter Haven so they sleep in Winter Haven and drive to Tampa or Orlando to work.

Winter Haven and Polk County’s future is bright and getting brighter everyday. It’s an exciting time to live in Central Florida and the glow just keeps bringing more people to delight in it.

Lakeland Pig Festival – Tiger Town – Florida 2010

Lakeland Pig Festival – Tiger Town – Florida 2010

2010 was a truly splendid year for the Lakeland Pig Festival.

Participants competed against each other in two categories, with amateurs in the backyard category (local teams, competing for bragging rights, ribbons and trophies), and more experienced entrants in a “professional group” who vie for a ,000 prize.

The backyard contest also follows KCBS rules and regulations, and a KCBS representative announced that the Publix Backyard Competition has grown to be the largest of any backyard competition held anywhere.

Among the participants were three teams featured on TLC’s BBQ Pitmasters that aired it’s final episode a few days ago which gained interest from those subsequent the series on TV, and no skepticism contributed towards drawing large attendance numbers to this undeniably standard event.

Last year, the Lakeland Pig Festival drew a crowd of around 30,000 over the two day period that it was held on, and saw just as many attend this year though exact numbers have yet to be confirmed.

It is a small known fact that most of the judges travel splendid distances to participate in the Lakeland Pig Festival and judging for every pro contest has been 100% by KCBS trained and certified judges so far.

The KCBS is “the largest international establishment of barbecue enthusiasts” and has sanctioned the Lakeland Pig Festival since its first contest in 1997. Professional teams travel from all over the U.S. to compete in four categories: Ribs, Chicken, Pork and Brisket who come in splendid numbers to delight in the ambiance and the Florida sunshine.

Over 200 teams from 17 states have competed in Lakeland since the Pig Festival’s inception, and many of these well known teams return year after year whom have helped contribute over 0,000 to charitable organizations within Polk County since 1997.
